Are You Sure About That Plaid, Sir?

I am rarely one to burble on about tevlevision, but I am quite the Anglophilic elitest snob. No, don't deny it, I know it's true. And thus, I must share my little bit of TV paradise with you: Manor House.

Manor House recreates a functioning Edwardian manor with ordinary people volunteering as servants and as the family upstairs. It's a great little show in the style of "Frontier House" and "1900 House", but focuses more on the upstairs/downstairs divisions and has a cast of people volunteering as both servants and owners. It's a reality show done by PBS, and it's glorious.

The casting is terrific. They found a fussy French chef, a hall boy, an evil butler overlord, and a funny funny second maid. They can't keep a scullery maid more than a week or two, apparently. Plus, they're British. Hijinks ensue.

To focus each episode, they offer a theme each time out. The charity carnival was very retro posh, but the shooting party was even better. And bringing in a woman who was once a maid in that very house was pure genius. Times have changed.
