Happy Birthday, Mr. Poe

Today is the 196th birthday of the inventor of the detective story, Mr. Edgar Allen Poe. Born in Boston in 1809, he lived much of his life in New York and Philadelphia, writing short fiction and poetry. He's best remembered for The Raven, Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Cask of Amontillado, The Tell-Tale Heart, and the Fall of the House of Usher.

While his techniques in horror inspired many later writers, his personal life was … unconventional. He married his first cousin (15 years his junior), and died under somewhat confused circumstances. Causes typically cited include alcoholism (he was certainly a chronic drunk), a peculiar form of election violence known as cooping, or diseases such as rabies. He was buried in an unmarked grave in Baltimore.

last cause of death for him that i had read about was a brain embolism... he happens to still be my favorite author primarily for his art of never using a wasted sentence...
