Sneak Preview: Spamalot

Yes! Spamalot — the musical of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" — opened at Chicago's Shubert Theatre in late December, starring Tim Curry and David Hyde Pierce. The early review by the Chicago Tribune indicates a musical of the highest Excalibur. Sadly, it closes in Chicago after today's matinee, and doesn't open on Broadway until February 14th. It returns to the Shubert on March 17th.

The article contains this priceless correction:

In the Jan. 11 review of `Spamalot,' Almighty God was credited with the notion of King Arthur's knights doing a musical on Broadway. In fact, the idea came from the Knight Who Says Ni. The Tribune regrets the error.

The deeply silly official site offers up several of the musical numbers, including "He's Not Dead Yet" and "Wonderful Spam". Deep geek fun. If anyone lucky enough to see the show feels like getting me a can of the cross-promotional tie-in special limited-edition "Golden Honey Grail" flavor of Spam, I would not object.

My sister spent a few days trying to land us tickets for any shows at the Shubert around Christmas time (as her husband and I are the only Python fans in the family) but to no avail. Too bad, as it would have been a lot of fun. Alas, I wouldn't have been able to send you the gold-can SPAM(R) product though--that was already promised to Max, my former roomie.
