Lawrence, Kansas

Nobody told me they had a WAR here in the 1850s: Quantrille's Raiders killed hundreds in a series of bloody skirmishes over slavery.

Granted, the town has improved some since then.

I had a little trouble connecting with the folks hosting the writer's program, but now that I'm settled into the dorm and writing steadily, I'm happy as can be. So far, I've solved two structural problems, have written some (rather short) chapters for the Venice book, and have revised big chunks of both books.

The other writers are all friendly enough, in various ways, and several are ferociously talented. I'm also reading some of their material; it either aspirational or encouraging, depending. We've done some pleasant dinners at the Free State Brewery and at Zen Zero, which is Thai but served up a very fine sake. Like all Midwesterners, the folks of Kansas know how to eat.

So far, a splendid vacation. Gotta get back to the books. It's about 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the sun, 95 in the shade, so no reason to waste any time outdoors.
