First Novel Humility

I finally made some progress again this morning, after days of frustration. I think first novels are just a place to realize how little you know. I seem determined to make all the traditional mistakes. The rewrite is going to be a bitch.

I really want to be able to put the rest of my life on hold while I'm in the final push. A simple "pause" button for life would be great. I could sell millions of them, I'm sure.

Since they don't sell those at Radio Shack, I'll take the next best thing. I'm off to buy a voice recorder (for interviews), then back to the manuscript.

A lot of people believe that first novels are "learning novels" to be hidden away in a drawer. I'm not of that particular belief, but it has taken about 3 years, and 6 or so other novels of experience to get my first novel (The House of Hades) to a point where I think it might be good. In the meantime, much less than 25% of the original material remains (and even that has been heavily edited). It might be closer to 10%, actually...

So, yes, the rewrite will probably be a bitch. But if you believe in the story, you'll work it until it works.

Taket it word by word. It'll get done :)

... of course, I could be a slow learner...

If you've already got seven novels done, you're hardly slow. ;)

That just means I'm a fast writer. Doesn't mean I'm any good ;)

I'll buy one of those pause buttons for life - I could use a couple extra hours a day!
