Fear My Mighty Megabyte

I have flipped the book odometer over into the 4-digit category. The Word file is an arbitrary few kilobytes larger today — reaching 1,081 KB in size — and that makes me happy. Stupid wordcount tricks.

I'm still trying to work out the final chapter for one of the POV characters. One character falls into place just as expected; the other ... doesn't. I'll sleep on it, and see whether which way he jumps in the morning.

Word Count: 108,356

Yeah, you! I can tell we'll be drinking that Eroica riesling in celebration sooner rather than later at this pace.

Book
Wolgang,

First, congrats on the progress. Second, if the book is not being written to spec., why the 120K word count as finish line? Is it just to give you a goal, to fit it within the archetypical 320 page mmpb, or what? Just curious.

Re: Book
At some point, I have to cut myself off, or I'll turn into Neal Stephenson.

Actually, when I outlined the book, I had roughly 40 chapters, and my typical chapter runs between 2200 and 4000 words, so I just multiplied it out and gave myself 120,000 as an approximate goal. I guess I've done enough writing to certain word lengths over the years that having a number in mind was a useful tool for me.

I expect I'll wind up slightly longer in the second draft.

Re: Book
Neal Stephenson is *not* a bad act to follow, so to speak.

Great news, as always, looking forward to the end of the draft being announced -- and hopefully the privilege of seeing some chapters down the road.

I believe I'll owe you a beer the next time I see you. You beat me like a red-headed stepchild (I'm not sure what that means, but I guess it's bad!) -jason mical
