The first draft is done. I toasted the event with frabjousdave and shellyinseattle last night. Yes, I have joined the burgeoning ranks of America's unpublished novelists. I'll work to change the "unpublished" portion soon. The journey of a thousand li begins with a single manuscript.

The book is larded with ten dozen witty notes to myself (which can all be summarized as "fix this"). The scenes are all there, the gears connect, the last couple chapters are far from perfect, but I could hand it to someone and they would say, "Yep, that's a book". I'll pitch it this weekend to agents and editors, and then (barring overwhelming immediate interest), I'll set it aside until August. I may even put it into a trunk or the freezer compartment. While it incubates into a world-devouring bestseller (or some approximation), I'll tackle paying gigs over the next month or two.

Oddly enough, wrapping up the draft was slightly depressing, moreso than any of the big game design turnovers I've made. I've been writing steadily since March, and I distinctly felt the lack of it today. Not that I don't have other writing to do, but it feels like a sort of post-partum novelitis. Maybe it's just that this is MY book, whereas any game design invariably involves up-front compromises with the game system, setting, publisher needs, previous material in the shared world, etc. I didn't have to make any compromises I didn't want to make in this draft. I expect several in The Magister's future, but not so far.

Bonus! Today's health news: the dentist has a new office with a camera that takes pictures inside your mouth and shows them to you on a monitor. It's just like watching Discovery Channel, only with more dread and loathing. "And here we see a filling from the Pleistocene. That one's cracked, and we'll have to drill it out…" I didn't mind the lighting gaffers, but the boom mic was a bit much.
