The 200-Pound Cat

Apartment-hunting is weird. shellyinseattle and I searched for apartments on the East Side today, but it's tough going.
Pet-friendly tops the list, and I have to tell you, every single landlord/management company does it differently: some care only about a dog's breed. Others care only about the weight. Still others take only cats. The rental agent of one apartment literally told me, "The owners will take any cat up to 200 pounds, but we won't take dogs of any kind. If they tell you otherwise online, I'll need to talk to them about that."

A 200-pound cat? Are people bringing lions, tigers, and savannah cats into East Side apartments now? Where's the love for well-behaved senior dogs? I'm tempted to show up at their office and ask about walking my liger on the grounds. Ideally my awesomest a landlord-eating liger.

In any case, if you know of a short-term dog-friendly house or apartment lease or sublet in Bellevue or Redmond, let me know. We're still looking.

So where is the new house located--which you'll eventually move into after a short interim period? Or do you not have that lined up yet?

We're not even looking yet. But frankly we're spending almost as much effort looking for a rental.

The power of bribery shouldn't be underestimated. Here the standard practice seems to be a matter of paying a deposit and a monthly "pet fee". Which seems silly (isn't that what the deposit is for?), but there it is. We're not about to leave the dog behind...

good luck. a dog-friendly unit was just behind "big kitchen" on my rental wish list. i got to the point of tears before we decided to let it go; the only places we could find in the neighborhoods we wanted were too expensive to leave money left over for vet bills and kibble.
i'd ask scarletbronte what the deal is with their building - anyone who will take Mickey is sure to take Snaggles.

I have no idea who you are, but....
I leap-blogged here through some post-NASFiC blogs. I have far too much experience in hunting down pet-friendly housing both on the Eastside and in Seattle, so feel free to drop me a line if you're needing some ideas (mikigal at gmail).

A good lead
Wolf, check out a joint called the Kelsey Ridge apartments in Bellevue. They are a couple of minutes from 405 and so close to downtown it's not funny. They are small dog friendly (Snaggles should be fine). It's also very nice, quiet, and nestled in a valley so you almost forget you're on the east side.
