Great Lakes Region Council of 1912

Emo Phillips is a comedian who had a hot streak that lasted, oh, about 2 months in 1985. His stage persona was gleefully strange, his delivery was perfect, and his material was peculiar. I saw him live once, and I found him laugh out loud funny, but I haven't thought of him in, well, 20 years.

He's still funny. One of Emo's jokes was voted the funniest religious joke of all time recently, and it (and several others) are part of a short opinion piece that Phillips wrote for the Guardian. Worth a quick read.

Emo....man, there's nostalgia. Saw him in Madison in either 1985 or 1986. Funny, funny man.....though I doubt I could remember too many of the jokes. One of those "you had to be there" guys.....

Yeah, good article. Neat to see where that came from. I agree with him that the slow throttling of humor is not a good thing.

Not to totally ignore the point of your post, but... is the British government really thinking of banning religious humor?

Yes it is, or at least a bill was proposed in Parliament. I wish I could find the BBC or Guardian story about it.
