Mühsam, Mühsam

Stitching together the revisions for "The Magister" is happening, but it's slow, careful work. I feel tentative about some of it, and at other times I stride through the manuscript laying waste to repetition, exposition, and the dreaded adverbs.

Tonight was one of the good nights. I cut ruthlessly; I added the needed twists to fix a couple of set-up scenes. It turns out that the "Full Screen" view in Word is exactly what I need to improve concentration when I'm revising. It displays absolutely nothing but the text, which is what I want, and responds to all the keyboard shortcuts I use anyway. The uncluttered view also tracks pretty well with what the Microsoft R&D people say about interface design and interruptions (NYTimes Magazine, reg req'd).

Tonight I hit 100 pages of second draft down, 300 to go. The word count has barely budged, despite my efforts to cut. I'll wrap this puppy and send it back out by Halloween if I push and if the third act isn't as messy as I fear.

Yeah, progress!
