Olympic Disco Party

Watched the Olympic opening ceremony last night, and while it had some fun moments, the musical selections were just plain weird. YMCA? Moonlight Shadow? Funkytown? Gloria Gaynor? By the time they got around to the Eurhythmics I was happy that at least they made it to the 80s. The LA Times seems to agree, as they called it an Italian Disco Party. But hey, I liked the inline skaters on fire and the general level of spectacle.

The d20 SRD Hypertext document is by far the best way to navigate any SRD material, and frankly more useful than a paper PHB or MM. It's especially great when you are looking for monster details (see the Monster Filter), a spell of a particular type (Spell Filter!), or an obscure combat action. The execution is so good that it makes me wish that more Hasbro material were opened up (or that Hasbro made its current products available as HTML or other linked text).

Sammy Grimes has translated Tekumel to v 3.5, and it looks like both a good conversion and a largely faithful one. I'm tempted to run a one-shot game with it.

Musical Selections
Just guessing, but the choice of tunes may have to do with budgetary concerns. Oldies are cheaper to license, which matters if you're planning to sell DVDs of the ceremony.

Also, if they'd played any Kanye West songs it might have caused Christians to riot and burn down the Olympic village.

Re: Musical Selections
That makes a lot of sense. I also get the general impression that many of those tracks have a wider audience in Europe's clubland than they do in the States.

Which Kanye should I be listening to? None of it so far has seemed riot-inducing for Christians, but maybe I'm not listening carefully enough.

Actually, I was alluding to the recent Rolling Stone cover...

...which allusion may be somewhat obscure if you haven't been following the Danish cartoon controversy as obsessively as I have this past week.
