Our Man in Ur

About a year ago, I got a bit of fan mail from a guy who liked one of my adventures, a castle and dungeon riff I wrote a few years back. We corresponded for a while about gaming, off and on. Seemed like a pleasant enough guy, with a fair bit of time to do great gaming writeups of his group running through the "The Gryphon's Legacy" and then through his own stuff. He's in the military, a captain in the Air Force.

Then at the start of July, I get this email titled "Hello from Iraq." Suddenly Captain Ted has been redeployed. I get pictures of the Royal Tombs of Ur, the Ziggurat, a T-55 tank, various bits of Soviet-style light weapons, and even the captain's buddies. They are walking around in flak jackets and helmets in the 120 degree heat, snapping pictures in between disposing of ordnance and so forth. It's amazing to me that we've got troops doing a spot of tourism around the Sumerian ruins, about places I read about in Gilgamesh, the book that made me realize much of Christian mythology was a rehash of what had come before (see also the Mithra cult).

I'm so jealous. I'd love to see the founding centers of agricultural civilization, in Mesopotamia or the Indus valley. Heck, I'd love to see Egypt and China as well. But it doesn't seem likely. Maybe I should join the Air Force.

YOU'RE jealous? Hey, you're the guy getting all this great swag from someone who's there, PLUS you needn't worry about dying in any of a million ways to perish over there.

You'll have to post the pics!

Of course I'm jealous. They pay him to blow up bombs (extra ordnance seems to be lying around everywhere) and dig up MiG Foxbats. If that's not a cool job, I don't know what is.
