Hawks and Houses

Back in the days when I saw birds of prey at Ren Faires more often than at the zoo, I always thought falconry would be just incredibly cool skill to master. Sport of kings and all that. Now, it's possible to fly a few hawks at the British School of Falconry — located in Manchester, Vermont. No, that makes no sense, but I don't care. Gotta figure out some way to get there and go hawking in the next decade or so.

Oddly enough, I saw a glorious raptor while house-hunting yesterday: a bald eagle cruising over the rooftops, as close as I've ever seen one in the wild. Must have been a lucky omen, because we found not one but two houses we like. Now we just need to put in a winning bid on one, and stand over our kill, claws dug in deep.

Good luck!

What is the real estate market like down there, anyways?

Ugly. But improving.

The market here in Lawrence is crazy, too. My 3-bedroom place on a big lot with a two-car garage and an alley driveway - oh, and at least 20 trees on the lot - just two blocks from campus cost an astounding $140k.

Oh, wait, that isn't commiseration, is it? That's bragging *g* (sorry. hee hee)

You have no idea how tempted I am to ditch the day job, buy a house in the back woods of Northern Cali for $200K or some small Midwestern university town, and skip the rat race. Maybe a cabin in somewhere in Vermont or Maine.

However, the young 'un will have more opportunity in (or at least near) a big city. So we're staying and I've sold my soul to the banks.

That would rock!

Once when camping in northern Wisconsin with my dad, we watched a bald eagle catch more fish than we did. When it blasted into the water and took off with a big fish (and we'd caught nothing), we smiled and realized that it was time to call it a day. That was fishing we couldn't match.
