Smith

I had a grand weekend with my folks, who flew in on Saturday night. Sunday we did dim sum (Top Gun was very disappointing), wandered through the International district to Uwajimaya, and then to the Smith Tower observation deck. We had a fair bit of chatting to catch up, and it was nice to just wander the city on a sunny day without any hard deadlines or plans getting in the way. Shelly's efforts to keep everyone on a tour-bus schedule ("You will now snap pictures of the glorious Smith Tower. Thank you, back on the bus.") fortunately came to nought. We meandered from a trattoria to some art galleries to the Asian bookstore.

My only requirement for the day was that we take in the view. And whaddya know, Smith Tower has Otis elevators that still have elevator operators, and the people are friendly. It also offers a better view than you get from the Space Needle. The 1914 building was originally built by the Smith-Corona typewriter and rifle magnate, L.C. Smith, and has a long and interesting history that you can go find out for yourself. All I'm saying is.... Empress of China and Ivar's Clams.

Young Annabel, does your mother know you are using the Internet? Also, please don't drool on the keyboard.
