Astoria = Innsmouth

So the moment I've dreaded has arrived, and it's actually very funny. The trailer of the new Call of Cthulhu horror film (Quicktime) is available. The film "stars" Tori Spelling and seems destined for B-movie greatness, if not quite Snakes on a Plane level greatness. I could learn to like the Hollywood update of the crusty old genre tropes.

The trailer freaked me out a little because I recognized the bridge at the start (it's at the mouth of the Columbia River), and, in a burst of synchronicity, I set my last Cthulhu campaign in the town of Astoria where they shot the movie. Their location scout did a good job. The place is just loaded with Mythos flava, as in it's probably the most deceprit, eerie, Lovecraftian town on the West coast. Ask me about the Quinault tribe sometime if you don't believe me.

Huh, maybe this movie won't be a washout after all.

This isn't a Hollywood movie, though; it's a local Seattle production. The writer is Grant Cogswell, former Stranger writer and city council candidate (I voted for him). Dan Gildark, the director, came out of Portland's NW FilmCenter

When they were putting their movie together, my then-coproducer and I burned with envy over their colossal 450K budget.

I can't wait to go home and watch that video.

If that's their budget, they are doing pretty well by it.

And it further explains the choice of shooting location. Everything in Astoria looks like it was once bright, shiny, and new — about 75 years ago. Before the fish-men swam up the Columbia and ate the town's soul. :)

I'm happy to hear it's small-budget or relatively local. The Cthulhu silent movie must have had a budget in the five figures, and it was pretty great stuff.

Don't second guess yourself. You mentioned the only factor that needs to be considered, it stars Tori Spelling. *eep* =)

You could always rent Dagon to pass the time while you're waiting.
