Hehe, one of my favourite Chem Demos.

Surprisingly they also make a damn fine fuel for the "Sacrifice to the Volcano God" demonstration if I have no gummi bears handy.

Ok, I really really need to set up the volcano god version sometime soon.

Does it involve one of those red sodas, like Cherry Mountain Dew or whatever?

Unfortunately no. The volcano god is a much more dangerous demonstration.
Spectacular to watch, but definitely more dangerous than the mentos fountains.

Basically, it a high speed combustion of mentos/gummi bear in a liquid oxygen environment. Mentos give a nice sustained burn that is almost white hot, but is you are demo for little kids I prefer the gummi bear because you can add story elements and saw it's head almost completely off.

When dropped into the "volcano" it rolls around, and whines like its crying out in pain and part way through the burning head usually leaps from the container.

Making the liquified oxygen is the most dangerous part. Still a lot safer that doing shockwave (with liquid nitrogen) or fire underwater (with white phosphorus)... damn I miss my chem lab.

I expect if you tried the fountain with a red soda you wouldn't necessarily get the food colouring in the gas because of the speed, it might just stay white.

I love that commercial. Who knew Mentos would turn into such a great chem toy?
