Mountains of the Midwest

We're back from a family vacation "Back East", which in West coast terms means anything east of the Rockies. It was a splendid example of all the things I love about the middle of the country, best summarized like so:
  • Lightning bugs!

  • Pumpkin wine. Made with a woodchipper.

  • Chasing rainbows at 70 MPH. A cold front the size of entire mountain ranges.

  • Amish at the farmer's market

  • King Tut's treasures.

  • Blowing through wireless road tolls at 60 MPH.

  • Grandparents and great aunts and stories of the Old Family Farm.

  • The Dixie truck stop on old Route 66.

  • A visit with the European branches of the family tree, with World Cup commentary.

  • A gloriously heart-clogging brunch served with decaf coffee.

Really, a very fine trip. Oh, and I wrote a poem, the first in at least 10 or 15 years, but I had to put it down on paper to get it out of my head. Now what shall I do with the thing?

Back East
I ran into your lj through a link at the Writer's Weekend website for the convention coming up in Bellevue, WA (I am scouting who is coming) and just randomly saw this entry. I'm commenting because it never occurred to me to analyze "Back East" as a West Coaster term, and particularly a term used by people who moved west of the rockies from somewhere east of them. I was born in Washington State, but I grew up hearing my mother saying "Back East" all the time, by which she means Ohio, and I have to say that "lightning bugs" makes the top of my list too when I think of my trips there as a little girl in the summers! I've never had pumpkin wine, though. That sounds interesting...

Anyway, sorry if this seems out of the blue since you don't know me. I just wanted to comment while riding the wave of nostalgia. Have a good one.

PS: Post the poem! Or send it somewhere. Whichever.

Re: Back East
Yeah, the nostalgia was pretty strong when I saw the lightning bugs.

I look forward to running into you at Writer's Weekend!
