My Book, Dammit

I finally figured out why I'm enjoying the novel: it's the first writing I've done in years that didn't belong to someone else before I even got started. I don't have an agent for the book. I don't have a contract for it. It's mine, and I don't have to please any audience but myself. I can tell my writer's workshop, my friends, and my wife "Thanks for your comments" and completely ignore them.

It's all mine. Everyone else can go hang.

The reason this has become so obvious is that one of my work for hire projects is coming up on the writing calendar. It's a good project for a respected company, but it's not my baby. I'm in the ugly middle section of the book right now, full of snarls and complications, so I'm thinking the work for hire will make a pleasant break. But I'll be happy to get back to my own work.
