Bring Home the Milk

Some days it's hard to focus; Mondays, usually.

After painting and couch-wrangling and a bit of writing over the weekend, today was a mess. No milk for the morning cereal. An inbox at work that never let up, from the article that needed to happen this past Sunday to the co-worker who dropped an entire archive of 100 story leads into my inbox. Dropped them into email. One. At. A. Time.

That was followed by no time for lunch, interruptions of my interruptions, and many mega-bytes of neatly organized plans that teeter on the verge. That is, those items may not meet the deadline, depending on whether my collaborator goes on paternity leave this week or next. A certain sense of no control crept into things...

Saw some art and maps for the China Mieville article coming up in Dragon. Amazing work by the artist, one of the images matches my view of Perdido Street pretty much exactly. The maps: oddly, the maps made the world seem less magical to me than the ones I saw drawn in China's hand. His maps felt like an author's personal take on his setting, messy, with some blanks and question marks. The professional maps seemed too complete for me, or too ... anime? I'm not sure. Cartographic style varies just as much as a novelist's or a game designer's, though.

Oh, and as things were merrily piling up at the office, I got a note from the home front that we need milk. I'm not sure why it felt like a victory to pile a few half-gallons into the car and take them home, but it feels like the simplest, most honest thing I got done all day. Milk-soaked cereal tomorrow — victory is mine!

I would seriously want to strangle that co-worker in your shoes. I don't know what, but I'd have to say or do something after an onslaught like that.

Ooooh, China Melville. Maybe we should renew our subscription.

You really should subscribe; Dragon has been rockin' for a while, what with the Demonomicon entries, the Order of the Stick comic, and some primo Class Acts.

Plus, yes, the Mieville issue is just a couple months away.
