Neanderthal Genome!

I never thought it would happen, but apparently a group in Leipzig and another near San Francisco are sequencing the Neanderthal genome from a 38,000 year-old bone. Our closest ancestors, and the ones who may have given us the astounding gift of the microcephalin allele D.

Details in Nature, if you're a subscriber. Amazing.

Unfortunately, most of the genetic material comes from bacteria and such. Sigh. But we're *that much* closer to being able to build a Pleistocene Park.

Yeah, there's contamination, but they seem to be able to filter it out. I wish I could read the original paper.
