Japanese Lesson

This year we had sun and warmth into the first week of October in Seattle, which was delightful. It's definitely over: rained yesterday, rained all night, rained on me as I waited at the bus stop this morning. The weather report says rain tomorrow, rain Friday, and just clouds Saturday.

And I've learned a useful new Japanese word from Joseph Campbell: tsuyu, meaning "rainy season." In some parts of Japan, apparently it starts in July.

I prefer to call it "The Gray", because it's such a constant thing. The Gray moves in in October, and leaves some time in April, only making exceptions for Husky football games and sometimes holidays.

Yeah, I like the Gray, especially the sound of it. It's almost like living in London or Scotland or some such distant corner of the Earth.

And yet I own two pairs of sunglasses.

I miss the rain. It is nice down here though, nothing over 85 yet, and usually it goes from like 65 in the morning, to 75 in the afternoon, to 70 at midnight. It's nice, I suppose, if you don't like the rain. I like the rain. A lot.
