The Fun Part of Magazine Editing

I'm digging through the submissions that have come in for the next issue of KQ, and I'm having more fun than I have had editing in ages. I'd forgotten just how great a slush pile can be. There's the excitement of a treasure hunt, plus the need to read and re-read things that are on the bubble, and weighing whether a weak submission with an exciting premise is worth the work that would be required to bring it up to par. Not to mention, who should illustrate.

All the drudgery of developmental editing, line editing, proofing, contracting, and so on are still on the horizon. Cut lines, running order, layout, pagination breakdowns, and last-minute updates — bah! That's later!

Right now, I'm really enjoying this, and I think some of the articles will truly impress. I'm also happy that it's not just the experienced freelancers who are submitting; many first-time authors are right in there as well, slugging it out.

A couple newcomers are holding their own with the big names, I think. I'm like a kid in a candy shop.

Given your contacts in the biz, I suspect the quality of your slush pile is exponentially higher than the slush piles at other publishers. :)

It is astounding the choices I'm confronted with. Which doesn't mean I don't worry about next issue, but still...

Even the rejections all have *something* going for them.

Wolf,
out of curiosity what do you use for layout software?

InDesign, because it's a standard.

I'm not crazy about it, as it has a lot of trouble handling embedded URLs and linking for PDFs.

I was hoping you weren't going to say quark or quark express. I gave Quark about 5 minutes before I can-exed it.
