Hurray For Science! Let's Eat

After a week that is better left to the imagination, I'm ready for some good news. And it doesn't get much better than this:

Plants Given Resistance to Al Toxicity

Most importantly, they now have a mechanism for understanding WHY aluminum is toxic to root growth.

It's early days yet, but if it plays out we can feed a few billion more people. Which, depending on how you feel about animals and nature, may or may not be a good thing. But it's certainly good news to the starving masses of failed states and formerly toxic soils.

Oh, and the best bit is that having identified the gene, it doesn't require genetic engineering to develop strains that have the trait; old-style crossbreeds should do it, if more slowly. In other words, agtech-averse Europeans can still smile on the whole effort. But the European aversion to modern agriculture is a whole 'nother rant for another day.
