Power Supply Failure

The home PC's problem was a power supply failure, as I predicted yesterday. Worse news, though, is that the failing power supply appears to have damaged the motherboard. We can recover all the data from the hard drive, but it doesn't seem worth it to repair the heart of the machine, which dates from about 4 years ago.

So, poor pitiful me, I now have a fine reason to go visit Fry's Electronics this evening. I'll be in geek heaven for an hour or two, trying to figure out whether they sell silent PCs (anything under 20 dB would be fine).

Sorry for your loss.

Julia's still using one of those Macintosh Cubes from a long time ago here at Wizards. It has no fan, so it's perfectly quiet. Compared to the jet engine PC I have (at WotC), I would dearly love to have a Cube, terribly underpowered though it is by today's standards.

Quiet PC Tech
I've learned that there are video cards without fans, that case fans can run at 20 dB or less, and that a company named Zalman makes very, very quiet CPU fans (the secret is copper cooling vanes instead of aluminum, since copper has double the heat conducting power that aluminum does). For $30, you can turn a jet engine into a purring kitten. If WotC will let you crack the case.

Also, the new Seagate Barracuda ATA V hard drives use fancy new balancing tech. You can't hear them when they move at 7200 rpm. Amazing.

My inner geek is achieving Zen-like silence.

Wow, I remember when video cards didn't need fans. It wasn't that long ago, was it?

Music choice ...
Folk implosion? That sounds kinda like Jazz Rap ... or Classical Heavy Metal ... just doesn't make sense.

My head! AH!

It's a side project by Lou Barlow, the guy who did that Sebadoh and Dinosaur Jr. stuff that's much LOUDER and full of CRUNCHY GUITARS.

But yeah, it's trippy mellow weirdness. Imagine Spinal Tap turned down to about "3".
