Old Ballard

Last night the Alliterates West Cost division met at Conor Byrne, in an ongoing quest to hold our male bonding/writer's workshop in every decent pub in Seattle. The bar was near-perfect, in the district down by Salmon Bay where the fishing fleet has spent its pay for generations. No food, just pretzels and good local beer, Guinness, and better than average music played quietly enough to hold a conversation. I'll happily return, though the South End crowd griped about the drive.

As usual, our discussions were half bragging rights, half critique of the state of the film eh, games book industry. Ok, so we go off topic pretty often. Half of us are working on material for the same anthology. The other half were all stumping for various interesting projects, more anthology fiction, a great alternate WW2 horror story, and so on. If no one shows up with a story next time (and I count myself first on this list), I'm packing it in and will henceforth refer to these gentlemen as "Ye Olde Cinematastic Debating Society." I love 'em all dearly, but good lord, would it kill us to dissect fiction more often?

I was thinking the same thing about no one bringing any work. Good thing you had some. ;)

Oh, I know I'm a hypocritical SOB, but I'm worried that we're falling into a rut. And even if we don't bring anything, we could pick a topic, as Rob used to suggest.

My suggested topic for next time: "My Best Excuse for Not Bringing Anything".

I'm all for picking a topic. I mean, that's what we did at the first few west coast gatherings, and we had some spirited, interesting conversations.

Still, it would be nice if one or more of us had something to show next time. At the very least, I can se nd around a YA novel outline.
