Proofs! Glorious Proofs!

When I got home this evening, I found proofs for my short story in my inbox; apparently, even galleys are now circulated as PDF files. The editor has done some nice work on the story. Or to put it another way, it's better than I remember it, and I don't feel any urge to change her corrections.

And yet, I'm so very pleased to see the text again. There's just a little tinkering I want to do with an awkward passage in the middle. And I see a couple adjectives that I really don't need; they're overblown. Just a few nips here, and a few clarifying words there…

Yes, I could get hooked on this whole "galley proofing" thing. Game designers typically don't get the privilege of seeing their work in galleys, but it's nice. Fiction writers are almost always extended the courtesy. If I were a more cynical fellow, I'd say it's how publishers get one more round of proofing and corrections out of their writers; in fact, though, it's remarkably comforting to know that you have final veto power over an editor's changes. Even if you don't need to use it, there's a bigger sense of owning the text than you get with game projects, and I'm enjoying that.
