Scientific Mysticism

You know, I'm so used to religious folks of one stripe or another interfering in science education, science funding, and medical research, that it's really rather refreshing to see the Economist reporting on scientists investigating the neurology of religious experience.

It's not exactly the case that the shoe's on the other foot (that would involve taking money from the collection plates and assigning it to, oh, a supercollider or something). It's more that I'm delighted someone is investigating the chemical basis of some powerful human beliefs and emotions, and apparently some nuns are co-operating with the experiments. “Where does this stuff come from?” seems like an important question to me.

Deeper understanding of out-of-body experiences and the relationship between religiosity and epilepsy seem to be the results of similar, earlier research. Über nifty.

Very cool -- this is the stuff I was alluding to in my earlier LJ discussion story idea. Thanks for the tip!
