An Editor's Joke

Sometimes, a story deserves to be retold. This one is swiped from Teresa Neilsen-Hayden at Making Light:

Jim Frenkel was once approached at a convention by an attractive young lady, who said, approximately:

"Golly, Mr. Frenkel, I’d do anything to be a published author."
"Anything?"
"Anything."
"Then write me a good book."

I think it's hilarious. Non-editor mileage may vary.

Definitely funny. Definitely true.

The sad thing is how universal that experience is. I had an analogous experience with a fellow back during my New York days. A big gorgeous man he was, too, and he couldn't taken the simple truth that doing the work and doing it well was what mattered, not that he could give me "the night of a lifetime."

*sigh*
