Flight of the Vampire

Damn. Anne Rice is giving up the ghost, selling her mansion in N'Awlins, and moving into some gated suburban community, according to this story in the L.A. Times. The story is full of great details about her life and work, some really informative reporting. Leave it to LA to get the celebrity journalism right. I'm quite jealous of her library, containing 15,000 volumes with a full time personal librarian.

But I digress. Apparently the death of her husband is partly behind the decision to leave town. Even so... Some authors are just deeply associated with particular places. And Rice draws pretty heavily from her New Orleans upbringing and environment in her novels. I mean, can you picture Lestat Goes to Wal*Mart?

They have great cooks. They booze up a storm. What's the problem, Mr. Averse to Sunlight?

There are plenty of Goths in the Big Easy.

Um, I suspect it's the 30-feet-below-river-level thing, or perhaps the Corps-of-Engineers-versus-Nature thing. I don't think we'll have a N'awlin's much longer... but it seems we'll have Ann Rice a bit longer ;-)
