Deadwood

So last night during a dull stretch of the Olympics (read: gymnastics), I officially finished the Secret Ω Project. That is, my contract says "Deliver 60,000 words", and I have a manuscript of that size available to hand over. I'm done, right? Oh, if only.

What I really have is a 52,000 word manuscript of shiny prose and a separate yet interwoven 8000-word manuscript of deadwood. The deadwood is text that seemed like a good idea during the outline, but that's really textual junk. This sludge combines dumb ideas, notes to myself, rules sections that need better math behind them, playtester comments I haven't integrated, text that I meant to compress (but haven't), or text I meant to expand and complete at some later, mythical, golden stage of deeper enlightenment (but haven't).

So, the final stretch for me involves a ruthless round of cutting the junky bits out while writing fresh, better, tighter text in some other section of the manuscript. I'll add little or nothing to the overall word count each day while doing this, but it's necessary to avoid turning over a stinking pile of garbage for some poor editor to sort out.

There is a certain satisfaction in clearing brush. Hand me my machete.

Will I see you at GenCon? I'm guessing not...

For some reason, Gen Con Indy and I don't get along; I missed last year as well.

However, next year the Secret Ω Project, some anthologies, and a few other things will be in print around then, so I'm hoping to maybe do Gen Con then.

Will you be teaching at the convention this year?

Yuck, what a manuscript situation. Hope it goes well.

I won't be doing GenCon this year (again), either, because to do so means I would have to not be in class on the first day of class. Feck.

'Fraid so.:g:.

Not sure I'll teach next year: I can't afford to do it anymore unless I make money, and I haven't made anything for the past couple years.
