Out By the Ocean

Yesterday was spent visiting brainstormfront in Port Townsend with shellyinseattle. The three of us took our picnic coolers down to the shore of the Spit in Sequim. The weather was cloudy but, as normal in Sequim, there was no rain. We gathered some jackets and rambled off along the Dungeness Spit, right as high tide was rolling in.

The wind was strong, but we found birds along the waterline (beautifully camouflaged, almost impossible to see from more than a couple yards away), the skeleton of a harbor seal, driftwood bigger than my car, and roughly 9 billion sand fleas. The Wildlife Refuge meant that we saw large birds as well, including what might have been banta geese.

Best of all, as we walked along with the incoming tide, we heard the clatter of the rounded stones and pebbles as the waves threw the stones up the slope of the spit, and dragged them back down. I've never heard the ocean rattle before.

And I chased some the camouflaged birds all over the beach, much to the amusement of Shelly and Steven. The birds are called dowitchers, and they are perfect shorebirds for black and white and grey photography. I'm thrilled to have caught them on the wing, because those suckers are FAST.

Afterwards, we hiked up the hill back to the parking lot. The food highlights included apple pie, barley wine, and clam chowder at Fins Coastal Cuisine. As we zipped home in a bit of rain, we were the last car to get on the Kingston-Edmonds ferry, catching it just in time to see the gangplank pulled up behind us ("Last call for the 9:55 ferry! Last call!"). No waiting, no fuss. The perfect trip to the Peninsula.

Fun! You've just added another to the list of Things I Wish I'd Done in the area before fleeing to fair Canadia. On the other hand, I'm not complaining about this weekend in Ashland ... as long as the weather continues to hold. We had a bit of a scare last night, and I began to fear I was once again The Gloom That Came to [City Name].

This afternoon is indoors, but tonight's in the Elizabethan again. Do the no-rain dance for me. Sounds like you got some practice with those dowitchers.

The free photo-hosting site was down. Seems fine now.

I guess I can't complain, since free is... well, free.

Still not seeing the pictures, Monkey Boy. They're showing up a busted-image icon in IE.

I can't get the error to reproduce. It looks fine in IE and Firefox.

Intermittent error? Hosting issue? I have no idea. The pointers are correct. The problem has to be somewhere else.
