Short Story Rewrite

I went to Barnes & Nobles today, to write in their crushingly dull coffee area. Once again, corporate culture blended into the background and I was on a tear, adding 2,500 words to a short story for a rewrite. Three hours later, I had devoured an apple tart and completed a second draft.

The resulting story is stronger, but I'm not 100% convinced that one of the editor's suggestions was entirely worthwhile. It adds a new dimension to the latter half of the story, but at the expense of introducing a new character, a new twist, some discussion of magic, and a whole new scene. In some ways, these are all fine additions, and yes, it does pay by the word. But I feel that the story's now a little crowded with new elements, perhaps a dozen or more, which could easily confuse a reader.

Sometimes it's better to go short and sweet. I guess I'll pass the result around the writer's group and see what they think. I've still got a week before I need to turn over the revision, so another draft isn't out of the question.

Super work: 2,500 words in a day is an accomplishment.
