Saying Goodbye to Some Favorite Chapters

The Alliterates met last night, though we were a few members short and our special guest had to cancel. That's the bad news; the good news is that three of us had new stories and chapters to share. I shared the first five chapters of my book, and have a few more chapters for next time. It felt really good to focus on fiction.

I'm finally regaining traction on the book after a long slow spell. I've got scene issues coming together, and my villain problems are largely solved. Most important, I'm becoming much more ruthless in my cuts, writing choices, and scene decisions. I may finally be ready to abandon two, maybe three, large chapters that were the inspirations and touchstones for the entire book. They feel like they belong in a sequel, or another book entirely, or perhaps a really good short story.

I'm fond of the chapters, but the contortions I'm going through to keep them in the book have gotten ridiculous. So, I'm ditching them.

apropos of nothing at all in your post, but I love the Venetian icon.

Thanks! I've got a whole collection of heraldic devices from extinct political entities and republics, taken from Civic Heraldry. Mainz, Koenigsberg, Istria, Burgundy, the Holy Roman Empire...

You got a favorite?
