Progress Report for Saturday, April 30

So I hit the 3/4 mark today, though it seems I'm much closer to the end than that. It was a bit of a wrestling match today, as I had to show a character being ridiculously clever. Which is fine, but some days I'm not smarter than the characters. Today, fortunately, I think I pulled off the bit about being smarter than a fictional 17-year-old. Maybe.

I've got some issues of character to resolve, and one major tough choice about the ending is still staring at me every time I power up the laptop. As far as I can tell, that's the very last of the big character decisions; everything else is about "bulking up", blocking, sequencing, imagining in tighter focus, or the like. For me, this is rewrite work I suspect that I'll reach the last chapter in the next 10,000 words or so, and all the remaining work will be part of the rewrite. Most of my work gets longer in rewrites, and I imagine it will hold true here as well.

Attended a truly superfine party at writersweekend and loloc 's place tonight. Talked with the usual suspects and some new folks, such as Charlie Kuhlman and his friend Ann, as well as lilac_wine, Harold and Eve, and too many other grand folks to list. We talked about how we got started writing, young writers, e-publishing, romance vs SF expectations for con panels, film trilogies, and hot elf sex. Maybe it was the drinks Charlie was mixing; they were kind of on the strong side.

I learned that I'll be a babbling fanboy for at least a few minutes at next year's Writer's Weekend. The guest list is more impressive every time I hear it. Names like Michael Connelly, Kage Baker, and Guy Gabriel Kay were all bandied about in some seriousness.
