Days Well Spent

Yesterday was Day One of the last push on the first draft.

I spent the morning in the Suzzallo reading room almost entirely by myself (and I don't blame the students one bit for enjoying the heat and sun). I untangled four or five plot snarls that have plagued me for a time, and I swear it's just like messing with string: it seems impossibly knotty until suddenly it all loosens up and falls into place. In the afternoon, I was joined by John Rateliff and Shelly, and we all sat quite amiably typing, taking notes, and holding whispered conversations in the cavernous hall.

I made some plans to go see Overlord as part of the Seattle Film Festival. it's gotten mixed reviews, but I think it's my kind of film. More than Marebito, at any rate.

Shelly and I met up with frabjousdave and some excellent company for a film festival dissection and birthday beer. The conversation lurched alternately betwen books and films, and the disagreements were friendly. I am very sorry to have missed Godzilla Final Wars, but in my defense, I had no %*&@ idea that it was coming as part of SIFF. That's actually my standard operating procedure with SIFF: the phone-book-sized catalog of 300+ films both intimidates and bores me, so I don't figure out what to see until after it has played at least once. Someday I'll pay attention to the festival schedule, and no one will see me for days on end until I crawl back to the light from underneath the steam tunnels.

Saw four grey herons on my drive back from work on Friday. They must be nesting.

I wanted to see Overlord as well, but it's playing opposite the Gits. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to see Overlord on DVD or somesuch but I'm not sure a documentary about an obscure Seattle punk band whose singer was murdered is going to be easy to see elsewhere.

My conflict is with 36 Quai des Orfevres, which stars my two favorite ugly, charismatic Frenchmen. It also scores a bit higher on IMDb. Can I persuade you to defect with me?

A police drama in Paris? Sure, what the heck.

Can you score me a ticket for it?

Alas, I saw the note too late to get you one on this side of town. Tomorrow they'll be available at the Neptune, which I'll be attending only just before the show. I do not expect it will be a sell-out, however, so you should have no trouble getting one at the box office.

I'm staying for the show afterward:Letter from an Unknown Woman, which is getting raves from the fools I trust.
