The Pursuit of Happiness

The neighbors are firing off some late fireworks, so I'm awake.

Some people love Christmas. I prefer the 4th of July.

We held the 2nd Annual 4th of July Bratwurst BBQ, and I'm leaning toward continuing the tradition. My devotion to the 4th probably comes from my parent's immigrant status. I'm the first generation born in this country, so I get sentimental about it. My parents went through plenty to get here (no, not Ellis Island, but still), and I consider myself fortunate to live here. America is a great country, and I enjoy celebrating it with the great friends from all around Seattle.

Plus, it's a holiday that involves fire.

We talked games and writing and anime. I mentioned the daily commute as Hero's Journey, and shellyinseattle collected quite a few books to send to soldiers overseas using the special FedEx donation shipping offer. I talked about "The Magister" with the neighbors and sigtrent and oni_anne. I didn't get to chat to everyone as much as I'd like, and yet I'm very pleased to see them all. Plans were hatched for future visits to Fiddler's Inn and future writing gigs.

Maybe next year I get a cake for the national birthday party. 230 candles would make for quite a bonfire.

A parting thought from Judge Learned Hand: "Liberty lies in the hearts of men and women; when it dies there, no constitution, no law, no court can save it." Certainly a thought worth grilling a few brats and downing a few drinks to celebrate.
