First Playtest for "Age of Worms"

My "throwback to the olde days" adventure got its first playtest Friday night, and it went well. It's entirely dangerous enough to kill off a few characters but not TOO lethal. Call me Goldilocks, I guess. Two areas are likely to kill foolish or overconfident parties outright, but since both require that the party be more aggressive than smart, I'm fine with that. The tone and subplots are looking pretty fine, the puzzles are good, and the characters are rather better than usual. Only the architecture of one section seems likely to be heavily revised.

Naturally, I spent the weekend writing in reaction to the savvy comments from the playtest. I caught up on all the niggling little details that I kept *meaning* to fix earlier. The first draft is officially done, as are the maps. This gives me exactly 7 days to get the second draft complete. That's a little less time than I'd like, but it's completely doable at this length (~20K). The whole thing will apparently get an internal Paizo playtest as well.

As a reward, I cooked up a big grilled tomato salad and a Persian-style buffalo steak. I must say, I have out-freakin'-done myself. The meat was very good, but the tomato salad was killer. Perfect summer flavor.

1) Heat grill to high.
2) Wash 5-6 ripe tomatoes, cut in half
3) Cut one yellow onion into 1/4" slices
4) Oil the grill, then baste both vegetables with oil olive. Throw tomatoes (face down) and onion on grill at medium-high heat until tomatos are bubbling, about 8-10 minutes. When the skins split, you're pretty much there.
5) While onions continue grilling, remove tomatoes from grill and cut them smaller, about 1" chunks. Remove some of the seeds and water.
6) Wash and coarsely chop about 1 cup fresh parsley.
7) By this time, onions are done with definite grill marks. Chop onions into 1/2" inch chunks, throw into bowl with tomatos.
8) Add ~1/3 cup olive oil, 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar, and juice of 1/2 small lemon to bowl. Salt and pepper to taste.
9) Mix and serve. Serves three.

And here I was feeling satisfied with my humdrum cooking of pasta with fresh vegetables on my little stove.

And then you go on blathering about a cool role-playing session and your fancy grill. Sheesh! :P
