Full Manuscript Requested

An agent requested the full manuscript for the first book. I have the manuscript in hand, but I really, really, really want to retune the whole thing. Some of the later chapters are completely unpolished; others still have plenty of loose ends. One chapter probably needs to be cut (and honestly really belongs with a subplot in the sequel). I don't think I have time for a complete second draft, but I'll have to give some thought to what is the most valuable cleanup and what's needless fussing.

How soon do agents expect to see requested material? A few days, weeks? A month or two? Any advice (especially from editors and agents) would be appreciated.

First: Congratulations! Excellent news.

Second, my usual response is, "Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. Send the manuscript out directly." If you really feel insecure about it, send it out within 4 weeks, no more. Don't get lost in the revision process. Abandon the book at week 3 if you have to in order to get it out the door. This is a great opportunity; don't let your own doubts get the better of you. It's a good book, Wolf. It'll stand.
