So, the new catalog is out, and I can reveal teh Impossibly Huge WotC Project at last:

Expedition to the Demonweb Pits
Wolfgang Baur and Gwendolyn F.M. Kestrel

Expedition to the Demonweb Pits is a D&D super-adventure for characters of levels 9-12. It is usable as a mini-campaign on its own, as a story arc in a Dungeon Master's regular campaign, or as a series of small side adventures with a big payoff. The structure is very flexible and eminently customizable. The adventure uses a new combat encounter format designed to make the DM's job easier and to speed up play.
Heroes who become entangled in the adventure's plot soon find themselves squaring off against the agents of Lolth and Graz'zt across several planes, including the Abyss.

Any questions? Mind you, I probably won't be able to answer them, but then again I might.

I always like to see a bit of Planescape come back. Brings a tear to me eye. Thanks. :D

Oh, there's definitely a bit in there. Possibly more than a bit.

No Planespeak, though.

No Planespeak, though.

Good. Warning: Rant ahead, and probably nothing you don't already know.

I'm one of the people who believe the Cant was like salt: just a hint to add flavour. There were others (and I include some of the authors here) who used it more like ketchup: making sure everything's liberally covered.

As a Planescape fan, I didn't mind that too much. But for anyone who wasn't a PS fan, picking up and using a PS book off the shelf was too challenging: there's all this crazy language which isn't explained anywhere, and Primes were always getting insulted as being Clueless.

I think this contributed to the line's downfall, regrettably.

But I'm always happy to see another D&D (or just d20) product which has a nice heaping helping of Planescape inside, filed-off serial numbers or no.

I pretty much agree that the Cant was overdone, though it sure was fun slipping "berk" right by the TSR censors.

I think the line declined for a lot of reasons, the loss of Tony DiTerlizzi's art being one, and a few products that didn't work out as planned. On the whole, though, a very creatively successful line, what with PS: Torment, Dead Gods, the reinvention of the modrons, all that great Sigil material, Planes of Law.

The serial numbers aren't that filed off. I brought back a couple of my personal favorite monsters from Planes of Chaos and the like. Whether they are *fan* favorites is a whole 'nother question.

Hell, talk to me about it at the Alliterates. I may run a "best-of-the-Demonweb" version if there's interest.

I have a question.

Who do I have to kill to get on one of these "Expedition to" revisitations? First they announce Ravenloft, now this. I want in, in a big way.

I dunno. I think they're just going through the canon. I'm curious to see what's next: Castle Greyhawk? Undermountain?

Or as some wag on ENWorld said, Queen of the Barrier Peaks?

I would cheerfully auction off a considerable number of friends and relations to do Expedition to the Ruined Kingdoms. Or to the Night Below, even.

How similar is it to the first edition module done by Gygax and team?

There are some definite nods to Q1, but it's not a "Return to". There are drow and demons and ... but there's also some parts that are more 2E Planescape than 1E.

In other words, the underlying plot is new, but the tone should be familiar.

Wahoo! Yay! That's awesome. The Q series were some of my favorite modules! I almost never DM somebody else's adventure, but you can bet I'll buy this and maybe even DM bits of it.
