Working With China Mieville

The word is officially out on the ENWorld messageboards, so I'm finally spilling the beans on one of my secret projects. I've written up China Mieville's New Crobuzon, the setting of his Perdido Street Station novels, for Dragon magazine 352, due for publication in January 2007.

Just distilling 3 novels into magazine article length was difficult, but I covered the world, its creatures, and its people in D&D terms. Fortunately, the collaboration went very well, and I have a few hand-drawn maps and illustrations of Mieville's to keep as souvenirs.

I'm very curious to see how the final, edited, illustrated version turned out. January still seems far away. But I'm quite proud of this one; it required a lot of research, Q&A back and forth with Mieville, and even so, some rewrites to bring the fiction into alignment with the game.

They don't mesh perfectly, of course, but it's as close as the limits of game design allow. I have a few complimentary emails to that effect that I'm basically saving in my email archive for the days when the writing isn't going well.

You, sir, are a very lucky man. As are we all, because you've written this. January cannot come soon enough.

It also saves me the trouble of coming up with my own slake-moth stats. I've tried, but modeling their peculiar brand of fascination always left me at a dead end.
