Lloyd Alexander, 1925-2007

One of my first exposures to fantasy fiction was King Arthur (which I read rather obessively in grade school), closely followed by Narnia and Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain.

Lloyd Alexander died today. He was 83, and had recently finished his last novel, to be published in August.

His books were written for young readers, but they didn't talk down and they are fantasy books I'm happy to shelve alongside Tolkien or Smith or other, much grimmer works. I plan on reading his books to my daughter; I suspect they will still be in print when she needs them.

A great light has gone out. I remember very vividly receiving a boxed set of the Chronicles of Prydain for a certain Xmas in my youth: I was ill with some awful flu and couldn't enjoy the school holiday, so I stayed in bed all week and read all five novels. It was one of the best reading experiences of my entire life, not to be rivaled until, decades later, I picked up a copy of A Game of Thrones</> (different target audidences, same gigantic thrill).
