Flying with Style

I flew out from Seattle to the family reunion, and it was actually a pleasant flight. This has become so rare for me in recent years that it seemed worth mentioning. The carrier? Air France.

I appreciated the fact that the meals were real food (pike with new potatoes, cambenbert, wine complimentary — the French take food seriously). I was stunned that the flight was relatively comfortable, and the staff was both trilingual and genuinely friendly.

I guess I'm so used to the nickle-and-diming that the US airlines depend on now that it was a bit of a shock to see a larger crew on the plane, and hear greetings that actually sounded more like actual conversation than customer-service-speak. I kept waiting for the gotcha. It never happened.

That said, everyone in Hamburg poo-poohed the AF standard of service. Why? Because it's not quite as good as Lufthansa.

This is why I want to move to Amsterdam. Okay, it's not the onl reason, but still.

Yeah, the one time I was lucky enough to fly Air France, I was stunned at the difference too. Perfectly on time, comfortable seats, decent food... compared to the last time I flew anywhere in the US, which had a six hour unexpected delay, no food, and the usual upholstered bricks masquerading as chairs.

One of these days I'll have to see if I can try Lufthansa... anything better than Air France must be mindblowing.

That was me by the way, about Aer Lingus. Juggling two LJs it getting harsh on the comments.

I get to fly both Air France and Lufthansa in seven weeks when I go to Germany and back to the U.S. I hear good things about both of them from other parties, too. If you get the chance, fly KLM. KLM rocks!
