Book Dead in Water

Time to confess it: The Venice book has been dead in the water for over a month, and my original goal of having a first draft by Halloween is no longer possible. Thansgiving is a maybe, but I took on a freelance thing.

As it turns out, the freelance writing has been almost too easy, as I consider it procrastination from my real work. It's game design on a topic I enjoy for a very reputable firm, I've got 8000 words for a 20k project way ahead of deadline, and I'm nowhere near stalling on that one.

Why is the uncontracted work suddenly so hard?

The goal, of course, is to keep all the balls in the air: novel, game design, day job, marriage, sanity. So, taking a cue from my Goth acquaintances, I went for a little retail therapy online. Unlike those who value sartorial excellence, I'm more about gute Bücher, but it's the same principle of Stuff Makes One Happy When One is Unhappy with Oneself.

I've got a whole shelf of books that get me excited about my book. The reference book I lusted for has already appeared on the doorstep at home. It will be my reward for getting off my butt and getting starting on the dreaded "sorting out the middle of the book". Since I already have the ending, I'm thinking it will get easier as I wind down to the finale. Right, fellow novelists? Right?

I gotta get moving again on this book. Thirty days off isn't a break, it's a problem.

contented sigh, happy grin

I just love it when writers bow and scrape. Keeps me all warm and cozy inside....

Reserach books often get me off my butt, too.

The Dreaded Middle is always a horrible experience. Usually I have to sit down with paper and pens and a Campari and soda and rethink the last half of the plot, and then things start flowing again.

So the secret to the Middle is Campari? I can handle that. :)
