Except that we're still panicking about this instead of taking it calmly and doing the important things. One of the important things would be to increase production of the flu vaccine against this strain and to vaccinate everyone. The virus, if it's indeed out there, is already in the air and on surfaces. It will spread. This kind of thing may mitigate lawsuits against the schools, but it won't really stop a pandemic because it's not the first wave of infections but the second one six months out that really gets it going. NPR carried a story about how the same thing happened with swine fule in 1976 and the panic was for naught. I'm not personally saying to treat this incautiously, just that the hungry news outlets appear to be feeding a fervor that's misplaced....

Producing vaccines is going to take months. Like until September. There's just no way to make the stuff sooner, even though yes, a vaccine does provide the greatest protection against the disease.

The initial panic is definitely for naught. But even with the extremely low lethality of the flu (compare the 2% mortality of the flu with the mortality of ebola or AIDS), if 100 million people catch it, we're talking about a lot of deaths.

The news outlets are overplaying it, but the public is also overdoing it. I have a co-worker who's just about ready to buy 30 days of rations and camp out at her house until August. Right now. When there are no confirmed cases in Washington state yet, and maybe 50 in the US...
