Writers, Booze, and Geekery

Last night was one of those perfect nights out. I met up with four writers and an editor to discuss our various contributions to the new Amazing Stories (which has its own relaunch blog, BTW). We split the reviewer copies more-or-less equitably, and we talked shop about SF, fantasy, film, books, and really bad TV. For hours. It was delightful to be erudite and witty about books and movies that everyone obviously loved. We were on the same wavelength. Maybe it was the beer.

As it turns out, one of the contributors is my old editor at Duelist, a magazine that folded back in the 90s. He's looking good and doing well, and it was great to catch up.

My first reviews are due in a couple weeks, and I hope to write a few more every month. The best part is that I get to review one of my childhood idols; I've been disappointed by him since, but he's still one of my Top Ten SF authors.

The night wrapped up with some pinball on the Medieval Madness machine and a visit to Ohana, the finest Hawaiian sushi restaurant outside Hawaii. And so, to home and bed.

Cheers to you on what sounds like an evening well spent in good company (and freelance work--yay!).

Me, I hope to spend an entire weekend being witty and erudite....

Well, a girl can hope. ::grin::

Who was the childhood idol?

I can't say, yet. Ask again in a couple months.

FWIW, I grew up reading SF in the 80s, so that might narrow it down some. I must have read every issue of F&SF from 1979 to 1986 or so.

Amazing Stories back in print? I had a story published a zillion years ago. heck I don't even know if I could locate it now a days - I was only 17 when I submitted it.

Re: Wow
Yes, the first issue (#603, I think) will appear in July or August.

You should submit another story.

Re: Humor a Philistine
Actually, they're fairly similar. The difference is mostly the presence of SPAM on musubi, rolls, and so forth.

Ohana offers a bit of a tiki-bar atmosphere and fruity tropical drinks as well as sake and beer. Also, waiters in floral shirts.
