GMail, Please

I'd very much like to have a GMail account, and the GMail Swap site hasn't panned out for me.

Anyone got an invite they'd care to share? I have fulsome praise for anyone who can help me out.

What'chu want a GMail account for? Need a bunch of ads to go with your email?

Or is it all about the street cred?

The ads look no worse than the ads on the search engine, but I'd like to see it for myself. I'm also especially eager to see their conversation-threading UI. And the storage ain't bad, for free. Finally, I expect to do a fair bit of web-based email from the central library, and this seems like a good account for that.

I was unaware that a gmail or mac.com or any other account provided any measurable street cred. All I know is that AOL accounts remove street cred. :)

So, have you got an invite to share, then?

Yeah, but that still means ads.

Indeed it does, generated entirely by the desire for people to have one and, most especially, to get in on the ground floor of a top tier account name, like "eric@gmail.com" would be.

+1 week after launch street value will be reduced to zero, I imagine, but right now: hot hot hot.

*laughs* GEEK ALERT!
I can imagine that after the launch and accounts are easy to come by the prices will cease to exist... however, I wanted two specific usernames I would NEVER get after the launch, so I coughed up the cash. Besides, it was cheaper than paying hotmail for more space. And for the record, they're six characters minimum, so no 'andyc' or 'kitty' or anything like that. (ah well.)

At the moment, dearie, I don't have a 'spare' invite lying around. I think that they're bringing such a nice price on ebay that people aren't handing them out. (Can you blame 'em?)

As to the UI... it took a bit to get used to it, but it's fucking brilliant, and the archive/search capabilities are AMAZING. Say what you want about ads (at least they're not popups like hotmail!), they're not overly noticeable and it doesn't detract from how awesome this email program is.

sidenote: Wolfgang, are you on orkut? [speaking of street cred. ;)]

Re: *laughs* GEEK ALERT!
Glad to hear it lives up the billing.

Yeah, I was invited into Orkut recently, but it seems fairly buggy and quiet so far. I'm told some Orkut accounts do get invited into Gmail, so maybe that will work out for me.

I've got one invite left - drop me a line at jmical@gmail.com.
