Went out on a quest this evening with
scarlettina in search of the Holy Grill. Couldn't find it. Hell, couldn't agree with Heretics Who Shall Remain Nameless whether charcoal or gas was the one true source of grilling Nirvana. Grillmeisters through the ages have disagreed, so the schism continues.
I did find this marvel of
bratwurst! The fine folks of Campbellsport, Wisconsin, seek to create the World's Largest Bratwurst!
Let us cheer them on, shall we?

For sheer quality of taste, go with the charcoal grill. Modern charcoal grills are not the ones we grew up with. They make clean up much easier, they tend to distribute heat better, and they come in nifty colors. Yes, they heat up more slowly than gas grills, but he says the difference in the flavor quality is marked and should not be ignored. Furthermore, he says he's recently heard that charcoal ashes may make good fertilizer; he's researching this, but I thought the environmentally-minded might want to take note. And charcoal grills don't require the maintenance of hazardous materials or their containers year-round.

I agree with all the charcoal voters (and my mother-in-law, a big griller, definitely gives coals the flavor nod as well), but charcoal got repeated vetoes from
So, gas it is.
As Shelly points out, it does fire up faster and shut down easier, so we may use it more often on that account alone. We're also investigating smoke chips.
