Kleinvieh macht auch Mist

Yesterday's writing exercise was entirely devoted to rewriting, and I wound up with 1,000 fewer words at the end of it than at the beginning. However, I will continue to claim that they were better words.

Today, a lot more new words to make up for what I chopped out yesterday, including a new chapter for the book. It's perfectly obvious that this chapter needed to be there all along. How it went missing I can't imagine.

Wordcount: 50,547

You go, dude!

Odd how rewriting sometimes reduces wordcount. That must be why my own wordcount velocity suddenly increased when I went to new content.

Keep at it!

Random ramblings...
I find the same to be true when I'm writing poetry; the more I revise, the shorter the poem seems to get. =P

This is off topic, but are you a Jack Vance fan?

I love the little hedgehog icon.

OK, I'm done now. =P

Re: Random ramblings...
My impression is that poetry is often about compression. But I'm not a poet.

I'm a total Vance fanboy, at least of the Dying Earth and Lyonesse. Not so much the SF. And I'd guess mckitterick is a fan. Why do you ask?

Yeah, the hedgehog followed me over here from Blogger, a couple years ago. I actually commissioned the art from a certain Tony D, and I've never regretted it.

Re: Random ramblings...
Poetry is often about painting the most colorful image possible with the fewest possible words, so I suppose you're right--it can be about compression at times. It's amazing I even write poetry because I tend to be a rambler.

I haven't read dying earth, but Lyonesse is at the top of my list. I like his SF, too--mostly because he's a superb writer. The story doesn't have to be fantastic, but the writing style makes it great.

I was just wondering because it seems like very few people have even heard of Vance. And I did cheat a little--I saw his name on your interests list. =P

The hedgehog jumped out at me because I like to draw critters, especially in mideival or SF settings. I'm not as good as that guy though. Reminds me of the paintings on the covers of hardbound redwall books.
